It is an amazing war game. The alternate win condition fixes a common problem with a lot of wargames: that they are decided pretty early on and the rest of the game is just sealing the victory. The ring bearers/hunt for the ring really keep most games tense until the very end.
The thing with heavy games like War of the Ring is really if they will actually be played or not. There's a ton of competitive board games out there, so don't worry about a shortage but very few of them are played regularly. I'm sure War of the Ring is a great game. Time won't change that.

Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer to this question. Officially, the game is on "hiatus", but most fans assume that it is unlikely to receive new expansions in the future. That said, there is a fan project called A Long Extended Party that continues the game and produces very high quality expansions with commissioned art and everything.

Shadow War unlimited is not a dlc it's just something they are patching in. As far as the ACTUAL DLC, the last tribe one comes out on Dec 12th, the last "story" dlc isn't out until May. #4.
